Somalia is moving forward!!!! When outsiders think of Somalia they may think of war, famine, and piracy. But today a culture of democratic governance, constitutionalism, an acceptance of the rule of law, and spirit of civic engagement is beginning to take root in Somalia. Somali One intends to deepen these democratic developments by encouraging broader citizen participation in politics.
In 2012, for the first time since the collapse of the state, a National Constituent Assembly adopted a provisional constitution, a reformed parliament of 275 parliamentarians took the oath of office and then elected a president inside the country. Puntland and Somaliland experienced similar transitions; executives were elected and new parliamentarians took office.
The provisional constitution must be revised and made permanent through public referendum. The new government has embarked on this work with assistance from international partners with the goal being a referendum on the constitution followed by direct elections in 2016. But for these efforts to have lasting success, the people of Somalia must fully participate in the process through activities targeting youth and programs to engage all Somalis.
